Stay Away from the Fire

Proverb for Today

For the LORD gives wisdom; out of His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He lays up sound wisdom for the righteous; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly. He keeps the paths of justice, and preserves the way of His saints. (Proverbs 2:6-8, MEV)

I’ll never forget the time my younger brother, David, set his pointer finger on fire.

Our entire family was sitting at the kitchen table enjoying dinner. We had just finished eating and were waiting to start dessert when David starts SCREAMING.

On the table were several lit candles. As we were taking our plates to the sink and coming back to the table to eat dessert, young preschool-aged David got curious. Something inside him wanted to find out what fire felt like. Being the curious young kid he was, he decided sticking his pointer finger in the flame would be a great way to find out.

So here’s David, finger stuck in the fire, screaming. He isn’t pulling his finger out of the fire, just screaming out in pain while his poor little finger burns.

Shocked, my dad jumps up and swats David’s hand from the flame. David’s pointer finger is blackened and throbbing. Exasperated, my dad asks David what he thought would happen when he put his finger in the fire. “I don’t know. I wanted to find out!”

If you play with fire, you will get burned. Don’t want to get burned? Just stay away from fire.

The same is true in life. I love how today’s verse breaks this thought down.

God is a shield to those who walk uprightly. Walking uprightly is possible by following what’s laid out in God’s Word. As we walk uprightly, we are not dabbling in the “fire” of evil actions—shielded from harm.

It’s simple. The best way to avoid the repercussions of evil is to stay away from evil to begin with. Seriously. You protect yourself from scandal, heartache, pain, punishment, and shame by daily choosing to live right. You want to be protected from evil? Live uprightly, or honestly and honorably.

Look at your life, specifically the times where you got burned. How many of those burns were the result of your naive attempts to play with fire? God has given us an amazing shield. Learn to walk uprightly as He shows in the Bible: His intent is to shield you from the fire. It’s hard to get burnt when you’re nowhere close to the fire.
