Proverb for Today
Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of your hand to do it. (Proverbs 3:27, MEV)
Devotional Thought
Few things are as strong and as bitter as regret.
Hindsight is 20/20 and with it we see what could have been or should have been *IF* we had only performed a certain action, made a different decision, or avoided a specific situation.
We lament not investing in Google, Apple, and Microsoft. We agonize over shattered relationships. We lose sleep over missed opportunities.
But what about the times when we should have done something good and we . . . didn’t? We saw a need, and walked away. Heard about an issue but gave an excuse when asked to be part of the solution. We were asked to be involved, but faked a commitment instead.
I’m guilty. I have lied about my schedule to avoid helping out. I have walked away, turning my head, to avoid making eye contact with a person in need. I have given lame excuses to get out of serving others. I say this remorsefully. This behavior is deplorable. And I am working daily to change it.
It’s wrong. And it needs to stop.
As I chew on the application of today’s verse from Proverbs, I’m encouraged by the simplicity of this command: just do good whenever possible.
Reflect and Respond
- Have you been withholding good? Take some time to reflect on past mistakes. Our goal in reflection is to avoid making the same mistakes twice.
- As you look around you today, in what ways can you give out good to those around you?
- How can giving good reflect Jesus to those around you? In what ways will this strengthen your gospel conversations?
