Proverb for Today
Does not wisdom cry out, and understanding lift up her voice? She stands on the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. She cries out at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the entrance of the doors:
“To you, O men, I call, and my voice is to the sons of men. O you simple, understand wisdom, and you fools, be of an understanding heart. Hear, for I will speak of excellent things, and from the opening of my lips will be right things; for my mouth will speak truth, and wickedness is an abomination to my lips. All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing crooked or perverse in them. They are all plain to him who understands, and right to those who find knowledge. Receive my instruction, and not silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold; for wisdom is better than rubies, and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.” (Proverbs 8:1-11, MEV)
Devotional Thought
Wisdom is valuable, more valuable than silver, gold, and rubies. Anything we could possibly desire doesn’t even compare in worth to wisdom and understanding.
I don’t know that I’ve ever met anyone who didn’t want to be wise, or have greater understanding.
So why is it wisdom has to scream for our attention?
Why is wisdom standing in the street yelling for us to pay attention to her? What’s distracting us?
In my own life, I have to wonder if the search for immediate gratification is one of the culprits. Think about it. Wisdom takes time. Wisdom is an investment. Wisdom is built over a lifetime. In a culture obsessed with immediate gratification, there’s no time to “waste” building in wisdom.
We want the 90 day course to financial freedom, 5 steps to get the perfect body, and the 1 month program to angelic children.
Imagine what would happen if you took the time to improve in understanding and grow in wisdom by just 1% each day. What would that look like after one year?
By the time 365 days have passed, you’ll have improved 37 times over what you had started at just one year before.
Here’s what that looks like visually:
Slow down. Take a deep breath. And prioritize the daily investment into wisdom and understanding.
Reflect and Respond
-
- What value do you personally place on wisdom and understanding? Why?
- What has been distracting you from investing in wisdom and understanding? What are you going to do to eliminate distractions?
- Write down three areas you want to see daily improvement in. Keep track and compare over time. The results will be amazing!
