Proverb for Today
A man will not be established by wickedness, but the root of the righteous will not be moved. The wicked are overthrown, and are not, but the house of the righteous will stand. (Proverbs 12:3, 7, MEV)
Devotional Thought
Stability. Security. Longevity. Now, more than ever, we want our homes to be marked by these three words.
We want stability for our spouses, our children, and our grandchildren.
We want each member of our family to rest, knowing they are secure—our house is established in a way that they need not worry about the future.
We want longevity—to leave a legacy that stands through time as a testament for our descendants to remember.
If we want these things (and I think we all do) we must live in a specific way to achieve them. This type of house can’t be established on the foundation of wickedness. Eventually, all the wicked are overthrown.
The house of the righteous stands because it’s built on and rooted in the principles of God’s Word. Jesus describes the strength of this foundation in Matthew 7:
Whosoever hears these sayings of Mine and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on a rock. And the rain descended and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house. And it did not fall, for it was founded on a rock. (Matthew 7:24-25)
Building on a rock as the foundation is a no brainer, for sure. But it’s not easy. In the same passage, Jesus compares those who don’t live according to His Words as someone who quickly builds their house on the sand. With no foundation, when the rains, floods, and winds of life came, the house was completely destroyed.
Building on sand is easy. It’s immediate.
Building on rock is hard. It takes time. But it lasts.
I’d encourage you to take an assessment of the “house” you’re building today. If we want our house to last, to stand with stability, security, and longevity, we must build on the rock.
Reflect and Respond
-
- What kind of “house” do you want? What kind have you been building?
- What “construction work” do you need to start today to build your house on the rock Jesus described?
- How can you help your friends and family build on the right foundation?
