Proverb for Today
The path of the just is as the shining light, that shines more and more unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is as darkness; they do not know at what they stumble. (Proverbs 4:18-19, MEV)
Devotional Thought
About a week ago, I woke up in the middle of the night thirstier than a camel in the Sahara.
Not wanting to wake Kaylee, I rolled out of bed and kept all the lights off as I set out to the kitchen for a glass of water. What I forgot in my grogginess was how we had rearranged our living room to put our Christmas tree up (it’s been up for weeks—I should pay better attention, I know).
So here I am, tiptoeing through the house in full stealth mode when OOF! I walk right into the Christmas tree, almost knocking it over. Ornaments come crashing down to the floor. In the silence, the impact of the ornaments on the hardwood is deafening! This noise isn’t just going to wake up Kaylee, but our whole neighborhood!!
Quickly, I shuffle over to the light switch and flip it on. Kaylee is still asleep—yes! I quietly clean up the accident scene, carefully putting all the ornaments back, leaving no trace of my fiasco, and shuffle back to bed. Success! Didn’t wake her up. As I lay down, I realize—I forgot my glass of water. Ugh. No way I’m venturing out again tonight.
When we try to journey on in the dark, we stub our toes, stumble, and fall. It’s inevitable!
But we don’t have to wander around in the dark. God’s Word is a light to all of us, showing us the way we should go. While we walk on this lighted path, we see clearly and are protected from the pain caused by random bumps and bruises of hidden obstacles and pitfalls.
The sad thing is, as I look at my life, at times I willfully choose to leave the clearly lit path God has me on to stumble around in the dark. I’m committing today to do the wise thing and stick to the brightly lit path God is leading me on. The right way is the bright way.
Reflect and Respond
- In what area(s) of your life have you been walking around in the dark?
- Why is it we often choose to leave the light to stumble around in the dark?
- What can you do today to better follow God’s path for your life?
